How does a loan amortisation work?

Credit repayments are possible at any time. According to the Swiss Consumer Credit Act, banks are obliged to grant early repayment or redemption of a personal loan at no additional cost.

In the case of a loan redemption, the outstanding loan amount of the current loan is taken over by a new credit bank with better conditions. This reduces the interest costs over the remaining term, which can mean considerable savings for you.

Replacing your current loan with a bank that offers more favourable interest rates is therefore always worthwhile. Replace your current loan at better conditions today.

What are the most important requirements for a loan repayment?

A new credit check is also carried out when a loan is redeemed. This also applies if car loans are redeemed early. The check protects banks from possible payment defaults and borrowers from potential over-indebtedness.

Detailed credit advice in advance is therefore extremely useful: the credit experts at credXperts know which bank will offer you the best interest rate based on your credit rating and which criteria must be met for a loan to be granted.

How much does it cost to pay off a loan?

In short: nothing. The Consumer Credit Act (KKG, Art. 17) guarantees every borrower in Switzerland the right to repay their loan early at any time – without any early repayment penalty or fees. You only pay interest up to the date of repayment; any interest already calculated in advance for the remaining term is waived. The new bank transfers the repayment amount directly to the old bank, after which you will only receive one more monthly instalment.

The only possible additional charges are: residual debt insurance that you took out with your old loan (which will be refunded on a pro rata basis), and interest for the few days between the repayment and the first instalment on the new loan. Neither of these amounts to much compared with the interest saved.

Calculation example: Pay off your loan and save CHF 1,659 in interest

Position Old loan 9.9 % New loan 5.9 %
Residual debt CHF 25'000 CHF 25'000
Remaining term 36 months 36 months
Monthly instalment CHF 805.50 CHF 759.40
Total interest expense CHF 3,998 CHF 2,339
Savings through early repayment CHF 1,659

Annuity calculation, rounded; effective annual interest rate based on credit rating. You can calculate your personalised repayment amount and savings in just 1 minute using the Redemption calculator.

The calculation applies to any outstanding debt: the key factors are the difference in interest rates and the remaining term. For a loan of CHF 50,000 over 48 months, the savings double to over CHF 4,000. We explain step by step on the page whether switching is also worthwhile for your loan and how the process works under the Consumer Credit Act (KKG). Loan refinancing in Switzerland.

Frequently asked questions about refinancing a loan

How much does it cost to pay off a loan in Switzerland?

Nothing. Under Article 17 of the Consumer Credit Act (KKG), Swiss banks are not permitted to charge an early repayment penalty in the event of early repayment. You only pay the interest up to the date of repayment. The new bank transfers the repayment amount directly to the previous bank.

When is it worth paying off a loan?

Provided the new interest rate is lower than the old one and the remaining term is still at least 12 months. With a remaining debt of CHF 25,000 over 36 months, switching from 9.9 % to 5.9 % saves around CHF 1,660 in interest. The higher the remaining debt and the longer the remaining term, the greater the saving.

When I pay off the loan, can I increase the loan amount at the same time?

Yes. The new bank will take over the remaining debt and pay you the additional amount – all under a single contract with a single monthly instalment. This is subject to your ability to meet the repayments under the KKG also applying to the higher amount.

How long does it take to transfer a mortgage?

Usually 2 to 3 weeks: the bank will reply within 24 hours, followed by the statutory 14-day cooling-off period, after which the new bank will transfer the transfer fee. You don’t have to worry about a thing – credXperts coordinates both banks.

What documents do I need for the redemption?

Your current loan agreement or the most recent statement showing the outstanding balance, your last three payslips, a copy of your identity document or residence permit and – for tenants – your tenancy agreement. The bank will obtain a debt collection report itself.

Is your credit rating checked again when you refinance a loan?

Yes. Legally speaking, every refinancing is a new loan, which is why the new bank assesses your creditworthiness and checks your credit history with the ZEK. An existing loan that has been repaid on time is seen as a positive sign – many customers are offered a better interest rate when refinancing than they were on their original loan.
