Loans for the self-employed in Switzerland: eligibility criteria, required documents and the application process

At what point are self-employed people eligible for a personal loan?

As a self-employed person in Switzerland, you can obtain a personal loan if you have been self-employed for at least 24 months exists and is entered in the commercial register (Zefix) and can be verified. This applies to sole traders as well as to owners of a GmbH or AG. The reason: the bank cannot verify your income via payslips, but only via the Final tax assessment – and that information is only available after a full financial year.

Important: credXperts acts as an intermediary Personal loans (Consumer loans under the Consumer Credit Act) for the self-employed. The money can be used for any purpose – for example, to pay back tax arrears, buy a vehicle, pay off expensive loans or as a stopgap. Your commercial bank is responsible for loans intended purely for your company’s operating or investment needs.

Requirements at a glance

  • Self-employed for at least 24 months, registered with Zefix and verifiable
  • Detailed tax assessment for local and cantonal taxes
  • Residence in Switzerland – Swiss passport, C permit or B licence for at least 24 months
  • Age up to 65 years
  • No outstanding debt enforcement proceedings or certificates of loss
  • Portable budget in accordance with Creditworthiness check according to KKG

What documents do you need?

  • A copy of your passport or foreigner’s identity card (front and back)
  • An extract from the Commercial Register or your company’s Zefix entry
  • Final tax assessment (local and cantonal taxes) – the provisional tax bill is not sufficient
  • Tenancy agreement or – in the case of home ownership – mortgage agreement or quarterly statement showing the amount and interest rate

If any documents are missing, we will let you know exactly what the bank still needs once you’ve made your enquiry. This will help you avoid follow-up enquiries and delays.

How much credit can you get as a self-employed person?

The loan amount is determined in accordance with the Consumer Credit Act (KKG). The bank takes the income stated on your tax assessment and deducts the minimum cost of living, housing costs, taxes and existing financial obligations from this figure. The loan must be repaid within 36 months using the remaining amount – even if you choose a longer term. For homeowners, the bank calculates housing costs at 3 % of the mortgage amount per year.

Example: CHF 30,000 over 60 months at an effective annual interest rate of 5.8 % results in a monthly instalment of around CHF 577 and interest costs of around CHF 4,630 over the entire term. You can calculate your personal instalment above using the Credit calculator.

Why self-employed people are often turned down – and how to avoid this

  • Self-employment that is too short: Banks will generally turn down applications for loans with a term of less than 24 months. Please wait for the second final tax assessment.
  • Low taxable income: Claiming a large number of tax deductions also reduces your creditworthiness. The income stated in your tax assessment is the decisive factor.
  • Debt recovery: Outstanding debt enforcement proceedings or certificates of loss will result in your application being rejected by all banks.
  • Multiple enquiries at the same time: Every bank enquiry is processed by the ZEK visible. You submit a single enquiry via credXperts – and we’ll select the right bank for you.
